November 19, 2003, Seattle, WA - Salmon leather?
Yes, it's true. For more than a hundred years, the skin of the salmon has been discarded, cast off , dumped and otherwise treated badly by the salmon canning industry in an effort to extract only the choicest morsels from nature's delicacy, Oncorhynchus keta, more commonly known as Chum Salmon.
Ivory Jack's Trading Company has worked over the last several years perfecting fine quality salmon leather that stands up to current rigorous fashion standards.
The leather is fascinatingly strong and has the look and feel of snake skin.
But, due to the formerly discarded nature of the material, it is guilt-free exotic leather more widely available to mass consumption.
The Pacific Northwest Coast Indians used the salmon, skin and all, for hundreds of years as they inhabited the salmon rich coastal lands of Alaska, British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State.
They traditionally tanned the hides and used them for a variety of uses that were part of their every day life.
But, the use of the salmon's skin was somehow lost on the interlopers from Europe.
Ivory Jack's Trading Company is pleased to announce that this practice has been revived with the addition of salmon leather wallets and purses to its distinct line of Alaskan and Northwest artwork and products. Founded in 1978 by Kurt & Francine Tripp, avid collectors of Alaskan art, Ivory Jack's Trading Company offers everything from authentic Northwest Coastal Art and prehistoric Woolly Mammoth ivory jewelry to stone & fossil bone sculptures created by several well-known regional artisans including Chupak, Chhem & Charles Carnahan.
Producing salmon leather requires several innovative techniques as well as tedious hours of traditional tanning methods to create a unique and beautifully crafted product.
Since no two salmon are quite the same, each finished product, taken from Chum Salmon after the meat has been processed, is unique in its appearance. The leather is then dyed in traditional classic colors and finally handcrafted into the supple high quality wallets, purses, checkbook covers, business card holders and keychains now offered by Ivory Jack's Trading Co.
These salmon leather products may be viewed at www.ivoryjacks.com.

Beware: Easter Can Be Fatal to Your Animal Companion
Things change when holidays come around, and Easter is no exception. New people come to your house with strange things, routines change, you get more tired, and pay less attention, and your animal companion may be exposed to a wider age range of people companions. All these things can confuse your animal companion causing them to do things they ordinarily wouldn't do, and also bring harm to themselves. Since it has been my fate to learn from experience, sometimes vicariously, sometimes straight-on, I'll include examples which I hope this article will keep you from having to experience.1.Keep careful track of visitors' possessions. People bring all sorts of things in their suitcases and purses, like nitroglycerine and sleeping pills. Keep purses and luggage up off the floor, and in the case of cats, closed and latched.
Or you'll end up at the vet's, as I did one year, when Thisbe smelled chocolate (Ex Lax) in my mother's suitcase and ingested enough to kill her, said the vet, who...

Liquor Store Retailers Fight Back Using Biometric Technology
Every liquor store or convenience store nationwide suffers the threat of fines, suspensions, even license revocation for selling alcohol to minors.
Until now, employee discretion, counterfeit IDs, and customer overflow have conspired against them.
But retailers are now protecting themselves and society from the dangers of underage drinking with a new biometric fingerprint identification technology that can verify ID in a fraction of the time it takes to "card" customers.
This speeds checkout while offering enhanced convenience and liability protection.
Return-on-investment for the technology has been as quick as four days. For years, Bob Zenner has battled ID counterfeiters supplying two local colleges.
Yet his liquor store in Alamosa, Colorado was recently closed for three days for a first "selling to minor" offense, involving a minor using fake ID.To avoid future "selling to minor" infractions, Zenner and an independent group of 20 stores...

Summer Is Tempting For Car Thieves
Be careful this summer. Car thieves are so tempted to do their deeds during these hot summer months.
This is according to Help Eliminate Auth Thefts, or much known as HEAT. The group warns that such a situation is very true for car owners are the ones who get careless during such a season. This then gives car thieves easy access to vehicles.
And to back this up, the 2006 FBI Uniform Crime Report also has statistics that shows that indeed, motor vehicle theft, is in its peak during July and August. And this not only is true for 2006. This situation has been consistent through years.
Terri Miller is the director of HEAT. Miller states, "As warm weather sets in, people tend to relax their guard by leaving car tops and windows down when they leave their vehicles.
This makes it easy for thieves to steal exposed property like purses, laptops and cell phones ? not to mention the vehicle itself."
Even Lt. John Milchalke had...
