Many of us have seen the emails that warn women not to park near a van; that your elbow is the strongest part of your body; be aware of your surroundings, etc. These are all valid points. However, when faced with real danger will you remember that email you skimmed last year? Not likely. You need to practice self defense techniques. Why do you think schools have fire drills? Hopefully by walking the children through an actual emergency, they will remember what to do.Your best defense is to avoid situations of vulnerability.

I am always amazed at the number of females walking or jogging alone, both early morning or late at night, when it is dark outside. Or the mother with her baby in her arms, toddler in tow, carrying shopping bags. Her position is screaming, "I am helpless against defending myself at this moment." Ladies, use a shopping cart or stroller to keep your hands free.Your Purse Doubles As a WeaponYou have a whole arsenal of items in your purse that can be used to defend yourself, should the occasion arise. Your purse itself can be used as a deterrent. Loop the handle around your wrist so that you have a good grip on it.

Not only will this avert any would-be purse snatchers, but you can swing your hand bag around and swat your attacker. We know how heavy our purses can be. This is a perfect impromptu weapon. Next carry your vehicle door key between your first and second finger. Make a fist around the rest of your keys so that the long skinny part of the key is pointing outward as you walk.

You can still open your door holding the key this way. Should someone come up from behind you, you are in a perfect position to jab his eyes with that key.Get Some Popcorn and Watch MoviesDid you know an ink pen can save your life? If you do not believe me, rent The Borne Identity, with Matt Damon. It is startling how much damage a small thin writing implement can cause. Hold it in your hand as you walk. If need be, jab it into the eyes, the temple, or up the nose.

I am telling you, that kind of pain will cause your attacker to back down and will give you a chance to run.Another good movie to glean some self defense moves is Enough, with Jennifer Lopez. The movie is about a woman with an abusive spouse. She had enough of his abuse, so she learned to defend herself. One key element in her technique is that when her estranged husband took her on, she always, always, had her hands up in front of her midsection, palms facing out. That way she could protect her vital organs but also had her hands in the perfect position to throw jabs.

Again, your first instinct should always be to get away. If you are unable to do that, you need to be prepared to defend yourself.Knowledge Isn't EnoughUse your purse, watch movies, and then what? You definitely need a little more advice than that, right? Call your local YMCA. Most have self defense classes, martial arts classes or both. Enroll and practice, practice, practice. You cannot learn everything about defending yourself by reading.

You need to DO IT. I have been practicing martial arts for years. I often get asked if I have ever had to use my training, "for real." I am fortunate in that I have not been placed into a situation where I have needed this training. But I now have the confidence that I will not panic. I know that I first must try to get away, and if that does not work, I have a few tricks up my sleeve and am not afraid to use them!.

Every liquor store or convenience store nationwide suffers the threat of fines, suspensions, even license revocation for selling alcohol to minors. Until now, employee discretion, counterfeit IDs, and customer overflow have conspired against them. But retailers are now protecting themselves and society from the dangers of underage drinking with a new biometric fingerprint identification technology that can verify ID in a fraction of the time it takes to "card" customers. This speeds checkout while offering enhanced convenience and liability protection. Return-on-investment for the technology has been as quick as four days. For years, Bob Zenner has battled ID counterfeiters supplying two local colleges.

Yet his liquor store in Alamosa, Colorado was recently closed for three days for a first "selling to minor" offense, involving a minor using fake ID.To avoid future "selling to minor" infractions, Zenner and an independent group of 20 stores known as the San Luis Valley Alcohol Retailers Alliance decided to "card" all customers buying alcohol and tobacco, removing discretion from the equation. But this created problems. Established customers found "carding" inconvenient. Worse, checkout times slowed as customers dug through wallets or purses to locate ID, which clerks examined for alteration. This added an average of 30-45 seconds per transaction.

Some customers "dragged their feet" taking an extra minute or two to complete a transaction. The sluggish checkouts became patience-trying. During the holidays, customer "pile ups" of 20 to 30 per checkout lane sometimes occurred at Zenner's store.Zenner approached Kelly Gerards, a partner at the security systems/risk assessment company Blanca Peak Technologies. Gerards found FSS, a biometric fingerprint identification system provider based in Altoona, Pennsylvania (www.biometricsolution.com). Gerards worked with FSS to tailor the fingerprint ID system for any liquor store or convenience store that needs fast, accurate age verification. Customers register in a one-minute process where they volunteer their driver's license number, date of birth, license expiration date, and a finger for digital scanning. After initial registration, those customers no longer need to hunt through their wallets or purses to locate identification, and clerks no longer have to scrutinize photo ID to gauge authenticity.

Instead, registered customers simply press a forefinger on a small fingerprint reader by each register, and within a second one of three lights illuminate: green (indicating the customer is 21 and able to buy anything); yellow (indicating the customer is 18-21 and able to buy tobacco but not alcohol); and red (indicating the customer isn't in the system and must show ID). The system can be adjusted for differing age requirements for each state."Fingerprint ID not only protects honest retailers from the penalties and liability of selling to minors, but also speeds the point of sale six-fold compared to manual ID checking," says Zenner. "In efficiency alone, the system will pay for itself at my store in four days. It would've paid for itself four times over had it prevented our first ?selling to minor' infraction."The fingerprint ID system enhances liability protection for any liquor store or convenience store. "It'll help retailers sleep at night, knowing that poor employee discretion won't result in fines or suspension," concludes Zenner..

Lucite purses got their start in the early 1950's, when post war technology came up with the idea for a higher class of plastic called "lucite". This material was ideal for use in boxy style handbags and could be manufactured in opaque or translucent color. Decorations were easy to add and included confetti, shells, flowers, or just about anything else you could stick on a handbag! These purses became all the rage of bigger cities such as Miami and New York City. It was love at first site between handbag companies and lucite purses because they could be made into unusual shapes easily. The most expensive lucite purses were made by Wilardy of New York and were showcased in major department stores throughout the country.

Of course with popularity came replication and many cheaper versions were made. Do you think you have found a genuine vintage high quality lucite purse? The best of the designers were Rialto, Llewllyn, Gilli Originals, Patricia of Miami, Evans, and Myles and Maxim. These companies marked their handbags on the inside with a stamp on the metal frames or a clear label. These bags are now collectors items that sell for large sums but, unfortunately, some of the clear labels have fallen off with age making absolute identification difficult. Check the lucite purse over carefully and realize that, if you are buying for an investment, authentication is very important and if it cannot be proved as real, your investment is worthless..

When you hear the word "beads," do you immediately think of jewelry? Or do you think of Rosary beads or some other non-jewelry use of beads?beaded dresses, headbands, belts? Perhaps you think of a country and western outfit, a studded, head-to-toe piece of jewelry. The first thought that enters your mind when you hear the word "beads" may date you and give away your age faster than physical attributes. If you're a product of the 50's, your mind may wander to pop beads, those plastic pull apart, pop together baubles that have risen in value from pennies to $20, $30 or more. If you're a product of the 60's, you may think of "love beads," which complemented the long-haired, unkempt look, or your mind may wander to the long strands of beads that once adorned inside doorways in Haight Ashbury with sounds of The Mamas and the Papas blaring in the background. Thanks to television, it's difficult to forget the beaded belts of the 70s.From Ancient Trade to Modern Computer ApplicationsBeads predate the mid-20th century by eons. Remember the abacus? Of course, you can't actually remember back 2000 years unless you possess powers unknown to this author, but you can remember learning about the abacus in school.

In Europe, Venetian glass beads and German metal beads served as currency in trade as early as the 16th century. Beads also played a central role in Native American jewelry.Bohemia (aptly named) was the center of the European bead trade from as far back as the Middle Ages. Through the twists and turns of history, bead making moved to Bavaria and now, has once again found its home in the Chezk Republic, in the Bohemia area, home of Swarovski Austrian crystals. In 1990, Native American traditional beadwork intersected with computer sciences. Several college campuses introduced a pilot program in which beadwork shaped the foundation for courses AutoCad and other design program courses for Native American students. The popularity and applicability of these courses continues today.Modern BeadsNow that we've strolled down memory lane and taken a quick look at vintage beads, beads no longer in production, where do beads fit into today's jewelry scene? They're everywhere you look from casual chokers and necklaces to fine Swarovski Austrian crystal designs.

Think beyond a single strand of beads. Start by thinking of a single strand of beads from which a pendant dangles. From there, think pins?yes, pins adorned with beads, beaded bracelets, barrettes, earrings, etc. In fact, think beyond jewelry to purses and other accessories. If you look closely at your surroundings, you'll find beads everywhere. The Many Faces of BeadsAnother thing that you might rethink is the composition and shape of beads.

Today's beads come in a myriad of shapes and materials, with Austrian crystal topping the list. Today's look du jour of transparent, translucent and iridescent beads don the bodies of the rich and famous along with everyday mortals. Venetian glass beads often encapsulate swirls within the beads for a unique, timeless quality. The latest in fashion trends includes little beaded silk purses. While you wouldn't want to cover yourself in head-to-toe beads unless you're auditioning for a singing gig in Nashville, a silk beaded purse with a complementary beaded necklace turns an ordinary evening outfit into a walking work of art.

Open your eyes and look for one-of-a-kind, handmade beaded jewelry. It's everywhere, and it's calling your name..

Strollers offer a wonderful and convenient service to parents and caregivers. The first priority in choosing a stroller should be safety.

To prevent tipping, choose a stroller that has a wide base so even when your child leans over there is no chance of the stroller tipping.

If you purchase a stroller that includes a recliner position check the stroller to make sure the stroller does not fall over backwards when the child reclines.

Remember to use the stroller seat belt at all times.

If your stroller has a basket, use that for purses and bags rather than hanging these items over the handles. The basket on your stroller should be placed over the rear tires.

To prevent accidental folding of the stroller always use the locking device. The brakes are used to limit the rotation of the tires when the stroller is at a complete stop.

Make sure you do not accidentally pinch your child's fingers when folding or unfolding your stroller. Be conscience of where those little hands are at all times.

If you are using a jogging stroller make sure you use the safety strap that fits around your wrist.

This can help prevent the stroller from getting away from you.

When you are in a parking lot make sure that the stroller is always next to you while unlocking the car. Put the child into their car seat before storing the stroller.

Before you cross the street, position the stroller completely out of the street and make sure you are safely on the curb.

Check your stroller to make sure it is completely opened and in the locked position before putting your child in it. A good habit to get into is pushing down on the seat with your hand to make sure it safe for your child.

When stopping on a hill, always remember to set the brakes on your stroller, even if you are just stopping for a moment. .

When we think of Holiday shopping, we think of all the glowing lights at our area malls and the various eye-catching decorations in shopping centers. Along with distractions with our ?to do' list in our heads, we get preoccupied with carrying bags and scoping out gifts. But with all the whirlwinds of diversions, we cannot put our guard down with who is scoping out our own children. To help with this here are the top 7 things parents can do to prevent their young from falling prey to strangers and child kidnappers in the busy hustle and bustle of the season. 1.	Stay connected.

Make sure you have your children with you whether in a stroller or holding your hand. Even if your child stays next to you other times of the year, all the distractions of toys, decorations, and Santa can make any kid get sidetracked. For older children invest in a family walkie-talkie set. Make sure they know how to use it and check in with them on regular time intervals to know where they are ? even if they are right next to you. 2.	If your child is lost go right to security.

Most malls and shopping centers have security protocol when a child is missing. Don't try to look for your child alone. Let them help you the second you realize you cannot find your child ? every moment counts. 3.	Know what your child is wearing that day, and carry a recent picture with you in your wallet. Most moms and dads have lots of pictures of the kids, but baby pics are not helpful if your child is lost and security needs to search for them.4.	Teach your child what to do if a stranger approaches them.

First ? Run away! Second ? Tell somebody!5.	Role play with your child ahead of time. Use tactics that some kidnappers have used in the past and teach your children not to ?fall for a stranger's sneaky tricks!" i.e. stranger favorite lures: candy, video games, comic books, toys, telling them "your mommy told me to bring you home" etc.6.	Do not have your child wear anything with their name on it ? i.e. back packs, purses, and jackets. Child offenders with pick up these clues and use the child's name when speaking with them to gain trust.7.	Practice, Practice, Practice! Reviewing these strategies not only will help your child remember, but keep it on your mind as well.

We all want our children safe, happy and well for more holidays to come..

The spring 2005 fashion trends show clothing and accessories that are very feminine and full of color, style and patterns. What are the experts forecasting for spring?Fabric ? Romance is in the air. The fabrics this season will be more feminine and light. We will see a lot of soft flowing fabrics such as chiffon and silk. A new trend this season is the big bold prints in wild designs.

No longer dubbed the tacky, the big animal and floral prints will dominate the scene.Handbags ? Handbags are once again going to be designed for use. Bigger is definitely better! Purses will be oversized and versatile, held in the hand or slung over the shoulder. A bag has to hold all of the day's necessities.Color ? White will be all around us for spring and there will be no avoiding it. The color scene seems to be all over the color pallet. Think citrus; alive, vibrant colors of oranges, limes and lemons will be everywhere.

Corals, various shades of pink, blues, aqua, taupe and deep gold will also dominate this season's fashion.Jewelry ? Pearls are still a front runner in the favorites for spring jewelry. Multiple layers of faux pearls and the "real deal" pearls will be combined in a big bunch to create long layered necklaces. Ears are no longer the focus this spring season, the arms are. Bangles and bracelets, big and small will take center stage in the jewelry industry. The earrings are moving from chandelier to long thin earrings and sapphires in pink set in gold will adorn many fingers this spring.Clothing ? It is once again fashionable to be feminine and lady like.

Skirts will be loose fitting, fuller and patterned. No longer are the longer pencils skirts stylish, at the knee or just above the knee are all the rage. Blouses will have a lower neckline making room for some fabulous necklaces. You can kiss those low ride pants goodbye because they are history. Formal wear will be long and flowing in rich colors.Shoe ? Out go the big chunky heels and in go the thin, tall spiky heels.

Women want comfort so the round nosed toes will be appreciated. Embellished shoes with stones, studs and patterns will dominate the market. Sandals will have a Greece flare. The wedge heel is going to be a big fashion in sandals.Coats, Jackets ? A huge item this spring for your wardrobe will be the trench coat; this time around it will be cinched at the waste with a sash. Say goodbye to the Poncho.

It looks like that was a one-hit wonder..

Things change when holidays come around, and Easter is no exception. New people come to your house with strange things, routines change, you get more tired, and pay less attention, and your animal companion may be exposed to a wider age range of people companions. All these things can confuse your animal companion causing them to do things they ordinarily wouldn't do, and also bring harm to themselves. Since it has been my fate to learn from experience, sometimes vicariously, sometimes straight-on, I'll include examples which I hope this article will keep you from having to experience.1.Keep careful track of visitors' possessions. People bring all sorts of things in their suitcases and purses, like nitroglycerine and sleeping pills. Keep purses and luggage up off the floor, and in the case of cats, closed and latched.

Or you'll end up at the vet's, as I did one year, when Thisbe smelled chocolate (Ex Lax) in my mother's suitcase and ingested enough to kill her, said the vet, who was surprised she survived. 2.Pay close attention to the Easter candy and other gifts.CHOCOLATE IS A SPECIAL DANGER. IT CONTAINS THEOBROMINE WHICH IS POISONOUS TO ANIMALS. People wrap food dogs can smell that you can't, but then again it doesn't have to be food. Chucky tore open packages of bath powder, perfume and bath salts as well.

If you catch Fido nosing around, remove the package to somewhere safe. 3. Keep your animal companion on their regular regime and diet. Don't, like me, carve the lamb roast tossing the fat down to Shy Nell, then carry it in to the table, begin the feast, and have Shy Nell enter the dining room and proceed to vomit it all up, sending one of your guests to the restroom. Try working that into the dinner table conversation!4.Protect your animal companion from new people and vice versa.

Guests can agitate and excite your pet so they get in trouble, do bizarre things, and also harm people. There are people like me who don't know what they're doing, stick their hand in the bird cage to acquaint themselves with your Macaw, and ? "the Macaw uses its bill to score and then, in steel-cutter fashion, shear the nuts in two so cleanly that the cut surfaces resemble the work of a metal-cutting saw or laser ?" and it's ho-ho-ho, off to the emergency room we go.5.Don't let your pet eat all gifts that are presented! The houseguest from hell, I brought homemade dog biscuits for my relative's Labs, which they duly ate ? and we were all up all night as the dogs struggled with fulminating diarrhea.6.If you animal is excitable, soothe him or her, or remove them if necessary, giving them a special place in the house where they can have quiet time.7.Protect your animal from young children. They can poke eyes, pull ears, plop down on stomachs, beat their backs with toys, and generally provoke the gentlest of dogs. 8.Guard against escapes! Weejums who lived with us for a while, was always looking for his chance to escape, and the holidays were the most exciting time of the year for the little rascal. Oh the opportunities! If you have such a knave in your house, make sure they have their tags, and explain to the kids and to houseguests, to please take care about the front door.

9. Talk to your houseguests, who are more under your "control," and keep your eye out for your other guests. Or your pet companion may end up with an injured tail and bad memories like Muff Tuff, who was sleeping near the rocking chair; or a temporarily injured paw like Stan-the-Man, who got stepped on by someone wearing bifocals. 10.Talk to your animal companion ? with soothing tones when needed, but also clear commands, so they know the rules still apply. Use visual "communication" as well, as your animal companion is deeply attuned to you.

BOTTOM LINE: You're busier and preoccupied, things change, it's a good time to stop and think, for the safety of your animal companion. They're counting on you!.
